In today’s computer-dominated business environment, many “technophiles” are attracted to information technology jobs. The lure of high pay and working with the latest and greatest technology makes for strong competition in IT. Employers will be looking for skilled workers with a combination of experience and training. Continuing education and certification will be pivotal in securing your dream career.

Computer and information systems managers play a critical role running a company efficiently. Technology permeates every facet of modern business and leadership depends upon their IT departments to help them attain and maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace. The job is fast-paced, ever changing, and requires a broad understanding of computers, networks, and security. While employers will be looking for people with Computer Science degrees or even MBAs, technical certifications demonstrate that you have immediately applicable job skills.

The Nature of Technical Certification

Computer training for the IS manager is similar to continuing education for the CPA. Your education requires constant upkeep. Technical certifications like the MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) and CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification focus on real-world scenarios students are likely to encounter in an information technology job.

The Benefit of Certification

Technical certifications are like insurance to employers. The MCSE and CCNA certifications, based on industry standards, give employers the peace-of-mind that you will be successful in your position. Frequently these certifications are used as a screening tool for applicants and without them, you might not qualify for some jobs. They are also used to help determine pay-grade and as qualifications for promotion.

Ongoing computer training is essential to anyone drawn to information technology jobs. Becoming certified will not only prepare you for the job but also demonstrate to employers your commitment to your field. This gives your current or future employer a quantifiable measure when considering you for a position.
