Business Education Opens Doors to Wide-Ranging Opportunities

by S. Clark

What can you do with a business education? The more relevant question is what can’t you do with one. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a slew of business careers. Here’s a look at a few of the options, and the degrees that can prepare you for them.

The Bureau splits business careers into two categories: business and financial occupations, and management occupations. As you’d expect, the former category requires more expertise in finance, while the latter calls for business strategy and personnel management skills.

Understanding the broad career paths in business can help you better decide which business education is right for you. Are you more interested in numbers and processes? Or are you more of a big-picture person who likes to lead and motivate people?

MBA Degrees in Business and Finance Operations

If you fall into the numbers and process category, consider getting an MBA degree in finance, accounting, or operations. There you’ll learn the theory and skills needed to run the finance division of a large corporation, for instance. You may also work for an accounting or auditing firm like PricewaterhouseCoopers. On the operations side, you could become a meeting and convention planner, management analyst, or budget analyst, among many other related careers.

Business Management School

Business schools also offer specialized business education in areas such as advertising, marketing, and human resources. Dual degree MBA programs are also available in technology, law, and other disciplines to give future business leaders specialized knowledge in key areas. A dual degree in business and computer science, for example, might be useful to someone interested in becoming an executive of a software company.

So as you consider your choices for business school, think about the career you want to have after completing your MBA. By planning ahead, you can ensure that you get the right business education to prepare yourself for a rewarding professional life.
