The Crucial Role of a Registered Nurse

As a registered nurse (RN), you will serve a vital role as you treat patients, conduct education and outreach with family and community organizations, and provide advice and emotional support to patients’ families. Your duties will include recording medical history, assisting in diagnostic exams, and using general medical technology, as well as administering medication. As a nurse, you will be a key player in ensuring the well being of your patients and their overall health.

Get on the Path to Nursing with a Solid Education

Generally, you can poise yourself for a career in nursing by completing one of the following programs:

  • Nursing Diploma Program. These programs are administered in less than 70 hospitals, and last about three years.
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN). These nursing programs are offered by community colleges and take two to three years to complete. As of 2004, there were over 600 certified programs in the U.S.
  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing. These nursing programs take about four years to complete. As of 2004, there were over 670 programs in the U.S.

Lend a Helping Hand

Regardless of which program you choose, a nursing diploma or degree will qualify you for entry-level positions. Each of these programs will cover the fundamentals of nursing, and provide you with the skills to help others as you pursue an exciting, and rewarding career in nursing.
