From Art to Graphic Design

If you are considering a career in art but don’t want to play the role of the “starving artist”, consider instead a career in graphic design. Graphic design jobs are the hottest among design occupations, and the best opportunities will go to those who have a bachelor’s degree and solid technical skills.

When you were a child dreaming of your future did you want to be an artist when you grew up? Maybe you were told by teachers and parents that being an artist is a fool’s dream. This isn’t entirely true — many artists fund their dreams by applying their artistic talents to graphic design. They work in corporate, advertising, or communications jobs as a graphic design artist creating logos, designing web pages and brochures, while painting their dreams on the side.

Graphic Design Jobs Can Vary

The nature of graphic design work is quite varied. As a graphic design artist you might find yourself drawing layouts for ads, designing sales brochures or marketing pieces, using software to create interactive media pieces, or designing websites. In some jobs you may be required to communicate directly with clients, and in others you might work under the direction of a project manager. In most cases it is important to have good communication skills and the ability to translate verbal direction into visual results.

What Does It Take?

While job opportunities are expected to grow steadily, competition will be strong. The best jobs will go to those with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field. Employers will also want to see your portfolio. You should be able to strongly demonstrate your artistic talent and versatility. Additionally, the best graphic design jobs will go to those with solid web design, 3d graphic design, and animation software skills. If you want to have a career using your gifts as an artist, but also crave stability and a steady income, then a career in graphic design might be an excellent career path for you.
