Understanding Social Justiceby Amanda DaflosSocial justice is defined as the practice of preventing human rights abuses and ensuring that nations, corporations and other interested parties employ moral practices. It aims to prevent racial disparity in the criminal justice system, as well as discrimination based on sex, age and religious beliefs. In preventing racial disparity in the criminal justice system and other rights of individuals, social justice asserts that we should be interested in the well being of the group and not the individual.
Social Justice Defining the term has caused politicians, theorists, those at criminal justice graduate schools and legal experts countless headaches. A clear and certain definition is often hard to agree on because the term is often used freely, correctly and without ever being defined. Theorists have questioned the actual use of the words social and justice together, arguing that the very nature of justice is democratic and therefore social in nature. The term is malleable and frequently used to rationalize the accomplishment of one person or organization's goal that they define as important. Another person may not agree that the issue is one of social justice, so how can we know when the use of the term social justice is legitimate? Social Justice in Practice While certain aspects of term itself may be debatable, those who work in the social justice arena might argue that its applications are not. Individuals working to end racial disparity in the criminal justice system or to implement unions, find that industry and society will be either hostile or completely apathetic. Either way - it is taxing work that has changed the course of thousands of lives and history at large. How Can I Get Involved? Some people choose to make their way into the field through humanitarian aid organizations working on the front lines. Others attend law school or go to criminal justice graduate school and get a job in the criminal justice field while others are involved by circumstance, like Martin Luther King. Criminal justice graduate schools offer a variety of programs that will help you find a job in the criminal justice field. In your job in the criminal justice field, you will find tremendous satisfaction, you will fight for social justice and you will change lives with every win.
