According to President George Bush, there will be no Kyoto-type accords to come from this year's G8 Summit. Citing outrageous expense and possible harm to the economy, it looks as though there will be no environmental legislation worth talking about to come from the meeting.

The G8 Summit is the meeting of the world's richest and most developed eight countries. At this meeting, the nations' leaders meet at a posh resort and discuss issues facing the Earth and its inhabitants. At a previous G8 Summit meeting, the Kyoto Treaty was presented that would cut greenhouse gasses from the burning of fossil fuels which would help protect the ozone layer. Bush later pulled out of the treaty, enraging environmental activists everywhere.

Details of the Kyoto Treaty:

  • Greenhouse Gases. The Kyoto Treaty aimed to cut emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels by 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-12.
  • A Grim Warning. Scientists have warned that the world’s climate could warm by more than two degrees by the end of the century because of greenhouse gases.
  • Methane Reduction. Another important goal of Kyoto was the reduction of methane and other forms of fuel burning by products that harm the ozone.

You can begin an environmental career by earning a degree from a local college or university. If the lack of action of the United States in improving the environment angers you, you should earn your credentials in environmental engineering and join the fight for a safer and cleaner world.

Environmental Career Options:

  • Conservation. Start your own conservation campaign and recruit other likeminded individuals to help your worthy causes.
  • Animals. Spend your days protecting endangered animals from extinction in re mote and exotic parts of the world.
  • Recycling. Create the next recycling campaign that urges the inhabitants of the Earth to save our resources.
  • Water. Join the fight for cleaner water by organizing a group to examine and purify our nation's water sources.
