Summer Blockbusters - A Lesson for Animation StudentsBy Dan GrushkinCareer Training Directory Columnist This summer will be known as the summer of sci-fi blockbusters. Stephen Spielberg's War of the Worlds is due out in the end of June and Marvel's Fantastic Four is set to follow next month. The two movies use cutting edge animation to mix live action with animated special effects almost seamlessly. It's the perfect opportunity for those considering animation school to learn from the masters. War of the WorldsWar of the Worlds is the story of an alien invasion of the Earth based on a H.G. Wells same-titled sci-fi classic that has inspired animators and movie makers for generations. This time Spielberg the veteran sci-fi filmmaker is taking it to a new level of carnage using the magic of animation. The aliens in the original book carried themselves in giant tripod machines. The director of E.T., is finally diverging from his nice-guy alien routine. Spielberg uses his brand of movie magic to make the invaders as frightful as we imagined in the novel. Those with the top animation jobs in the field have come up with an artistic vision for modern alien invaders based on the one H.G. Wells envisioned back in 1898.Fantastic FourMarvel's Fantastic Four is also hitting the big screen this summer to huge fanfare. Originally a comic book, the story revolves around four astronauts who are struck by cosmic rays and given incredible and strange powers. Their arch enemy Doctor Doom is poised to take over the world. Only the Fantastic Four can stop him. A classic blockbuster plot with brand new animation. If you've enjoyed the animation of The Incredibles, see how animation masters convert animation to live action. FF's brand of animation did a great job fooling us to believe the powers were real, including Mr. Fantastic's arms that stretch across the screen.Animation SchoolIf you're enrolled in animation school, or thinking about enrolling. These two blockbusters are the perfect opportunity to watch and decide whether you're looking for an animation job. The special effects can be alluring, sometimes mystifying. If you want to learn the secrets used in the movies, animation school might be the right decision for you. |
