Sugar and Spice and Everything NiceBy Debbie WilsonDebbie.Wilson@careertrainingdirectory.com Education Columnist Billy Reece may not have set out to become a famous baker, but thanks to some sweet charm and his mom's tasty recipes, he has become a famous baker. Just ask Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. They are two of Billy's biggest fans. But who is this man behind the apron and how can you enjoy such a rewarding pastry chef career? Famous Baker BeginningsBilly Reece is a blue-eyed, blonde, 26-year old baker from Leavenworth, Kansas. Growing up, he lived around his mother's diner. And while she served a varied menu, Billy Reece never could seem to get enough of her peanut butter chocolate pie. It wasn't until he went off to college at New York City's Parsons School of Design that he discovered his baking talents. He started off baking banana bread in his dorm room and was encouraged to experiment with other ingredients. Soon, he took a job at a local bakeshop (the Magnolia Bakery), whose specialty was cupcakes. By his senior year, Billy Reece was managing the place with the hopes of financing his own bakery someday.
On December 22, 2003, he opened Billy's Bakery in New York City. His mom, and biggest fan, helped him get the store running. Then one day, when he won a cupcake contest against 11 other New York bakeries, his business took off. Billy hasn't looked back since. Today, he continues to work as a pastry chef, making his famous cupcakes; however, he also entertains bigger jobs such as wedding cakes, cookies, pies, and other sweet confections. Now, stars from all over look to Billy to make their special occasion one to remember. And I'm sure it goes without saying that baker Billy hasn't let anyone down yet. Can I Become A Pastry Chef Too?Like Billy Reece, you too can become a pastry chef. All it takes is a vision, some creative talent, and a solid educational background. A vision without the proper training will only prove to be a recipe for disaster. So ensure your financial success by obtaining a culinary degree today. Not only will you gain superior skills and talents in baking, but you will also attain knowledge in finance, accounting, management, and other business facets, which will allow you to keep your business profitable and enduring. Who knows, you might just be the next Billy Reece!About the AuthorDebbie Wilson owns and operates a lakeside resort, managing all aspects of operations, including marketing and promotion.
