Now that you've graduated from photography school with flying colors, get set to get your first photography job. Follow our tips to help get your career in photography off to a flying start.

Now that the initial euphoria of finishing your photography program has died down a little, you need to think about what to do next. Maybe you want to join one of the large agencies, or maybe you just need to clear your student loan. The following tips are designed to help you stand out from the rest of the applicants, but for the right reasons.

Choosing a Potential Employer for a Career in photography
  • Location. It is important to apply only to employers that are feasible for you to travel to. You don't want to get a 'dream job' then discover you spend most of your time traveling to get there and half your monthly salary to pay for it. Commuting does not get easier with time.
  • Be complementary. We don't mean you to shower your interviewer with flattery (although it might work!). Make sure you fit in. If there is a dress code at the company, make sure you wear it at your interview; that includes sneakers and jeans. Don't however go overboard and copy a person's very individual style - that's just creepy!
  • Be Part of the Team. Your interviewer is looking for somebody who not only has the skills for a career in photography, but will fit in with the rest of the company. If the company specializes in portraiture, only show them that part of your portfolio. Don't let them think you are a bad fit for the photography job by insisting on showing them your skills in food styling (unless they ask).


What Else Can I Do to Help My Application?
Just like setting up a good photograph, you need to put the spadework into getting your photography job application on the top of the pile. If you do your research on the company, their style, any industry prizes, and names of senior personnel, you could come out smiling.
