Project Management Training - A Vital Step for Success

Project Management Training by Mary Hobson
Career Training Directory Columnist

Project management is a hot topic in industry a great deal today, and there is certainly plenty of publicity for project management careers around. But what is project management, and how does it fit into the management structures of organizations?

In fact, we can define a project as any activity that involves carrying out a non-repetitive task, and to some extent we are all project managers. However, business and industrial project management really came into focus with the US Naval development of the Polaris missile system.

Some projects are so large, complex, and costly that new management techniques have to be developed; from this was born PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique). PERT figures largely in some form in most of the project management training that you can take. Along with other project management tools, such as CPM (Critical Path Analysis), the project's many pathways can easily be charted.

New Management Approaches
Project management has become more prevalent in industry and business as the need for constant change and fast response increases. Hierarchical management structures find it difficult to adapt to change; they are built to cope with repetitive routine.

Today's economic environment encourages success through innovation; such an innovative approach requires effective project management. Organizations adapt by creating more fluid management structures, usually based on projects, and concepts such as outsourcing non-core functions.

These developments mean that many managers take project management training as a part of their continuous education, simply because - sooner or later - they are going to be involved in project work. It also means that project management careers can be carved out in many management environments, and indeed many people have found that managing projects helps to develop strategic thinking, and project management careers can lead to the very top of the organization.

Training for a Project Management Career
How can you prepare for a project management career? You will need project management training. This is available in many colleges and universities, and for many people, online project management training is particularly valuable.

Online project management training has a two-fold value:
  • It allows you to study and work at the same time, so you can apply project management techniques as you learn them, and evaluate them in a real project environment.
  • Online project management training gives you complete documentation of all your course materials, in a format you will find easy to use and incorporate in your professional communications.

Your project management training will not only equip you with the tools you need to manage complex projects, it will also help you to develop a more holistic approach to management. This holistic approach is essential in your development of a strategic approach to your organization, and for many people, this change in thinking is the pivotal point of their career development.

So if you are aiming to reach the very top of your career in management, a project management career could be a vital step on the way.
