Professional Fighter Undergoes Brain Surgery after Bout

By Kelly Richardson

It is well known that the sport of boxing is one of the most dangerous activities with a track records for serious injuries. Veteran boxer Leavander Johnson was the most recent victim, when he suffered massive brain swelling and underwent major surgery after a fight with Jesus Chavez.

The fight itself was quite brutal. So much so that ring referee Tony Weeks stopped the bout after a flurry of unfettered punches to Leavander Johnson's head. As he left the ring, Johnson was conscious and responding, although he had limited use of his left leg. Once at the hospital, a radiographer took photos of Johnson's brain, revealing massive swelling that endangered his life. Johnson was placed in a coma so that doctors could relieve the swelling quickly.

A Radiographer on Johnson's Condition

  • Neurological State. Although Johnson was conscious when he left the ring, he began dragging his left leg, forcing attendants to lay him down in the aisle and wait for a medical team to arrive.
  • Coma. After the radiographer diagnosed the brain swelling, Johnson was placed in a coma so that doctors could take actions that would reduce swelling immediately.

The most critical member of the healthcare team that acted to save Leavander Johnson's life was the radiographer. Without this professional diagnosis of the problem, the injuries sustained in the bout might have killed the boxer. You can save lives by completing your radiographer training and begin a career in the socially conscious field. Here are all the details.

Radiographer Training

  • Education. Radiographer training certification is a two-year program that you can complete online or through an area school.
  • Environment. As a radiographer, you will be performing your career duties in a hospital or medical center in your area.
  • Career Outlook. The need for medical professionals such as trained radiographers will continue to grow as the population’s health declines.
