If your fear of being a "starving artist" keeps you from pursuing that art degree, think again.

An art degree offers thousands of opportunities. Here are five great art careers:

1. Graphic or Multimedia Design: Graphic designers create advertising artwork, logos, web sites, posters, CD or DVD covers, and almost anything you can dream up. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) claims that 3 in 10 are self-employed, and earn an average salary of around $38,000.
2. Floral Design: The average wedding costs nearly $30,000, and that figure is growing. That means great opportunities for floral designers. This hands-on, challenging art career blends creativity with event planning, business, and horticulture. 3. Arts Administration: These crucial members of the arts world help to develop and produce arts programs, handle all communication with the media, write grants, meet and exhibit new artists, and secure funding. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, arts administrators in performing arts companies earned an average salary of $75,430 in 2004.
4. Art Therapy: Art therapists help treat and maintain the mental and emotional well-being of patients through the use of art. Victims of abuse or neglect may be instructed to paint to communicate their pain; stroke patients who cannot speak may learn to communicate through clay or drawing. This rewarding career in art employs your passion for the field and a desire to help others.
5. Art Education: Children who participate in the arts are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, and 3 times more likely to be elected to class office. The arts are essential, and as an art degree graduate, you know this more than anyone. Teaching art is rewarding, and the BLS says your chance of employment is excellent.

So you may be an artist, but you won't ever have to starve.
