Nutritionists Say a Gleeful Goodbye to Atkins

The Atkins low-carb craze changed the look of grocery shelves and restaurant menus nationwide. So why did Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. file bankruptcy in August 2005? Ask anyone with training from a nutrition program.

It wasn't hard for any diet proclaiming that the way to weight loss was eating bacon double cheeseburgers for lunch to succeed. But as Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine reports, founder Dr. Robert Atkins had no formal training in nutrition and weight loss, and "no evidence of the long-term impact of his diet on maintenance of weight loss and physical side effects of prolonged ketosis." Ketosis, the physical state upon which the diet was founded, means that without carbohydrates in the diet, the liver converts fats to glucose; the body begins breaking down its own fat, while suppressing appetite.

Why it Failed The problem with Atkins' theory, nutrition experts agree, is that this diet regularly incorporates high-fat foods like meats, butter and cream, promoting heart disease, stroke, cancer, bone loss, and chronic liver and kidney troubles. Fatigue, depression, hair loss, and poor skin tone eventually took their toll on Atkins dieters, and because the diet's power comes from losing water weight, it took virtually no time at all to gain that weight back.

Nutrition Training It's because of fad diets like Atkins that dietitians and nutritionists are in high demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that these jobs will grow faster than average for the next decade, due to Americans' interest in weight loss and disease prevention through dietary habits. Those interested in this fascinating industry must earn a four-year degree from an accredited nutrition program; most states also require special licensure. Clearly, as long as there are people looking for ways to achieve weight loss, there will be opportunities for nutritionists.
