New Career, New LifeBy Debbie WilsonDebbie.Wilson@careertrainingdirectory.com Education Columnist Staying in a dead end job is a lot like wearing a bathing suit in a blizzard. It just doesn't make sense. There's no quality of life being in a career or job you despise. And while the path to switch careers isn't always smoothly paved, you can change careers and actually thrive. For most people, probably the biggest fear in switching careers is that of failure. Will you miss the stability your previous job provided? Are you afraid you might not have what it takes to start all over again? Do you worry if rocking the career boat this late in your life is a smart choice? Well, if changing careers were simple, people would be doing it all the time. What's important to understand is that craziness and concerns are completely normal. In fact, they are necessary because they force you to confront the real reasons why you feel so awful in your current job. The good thing is that the craziness is time-limited, normally measured in mere weeks or months. How to Redirect Your CareerEmotions play a big part in career changes. Almost everyone does the panic/anxiety thing. That's normal. But beyond that, you'll want to redirect your career to match your future goals and desires. For some individuals, that means a promotion, pay raise, or another job within the same industry. For others, it might mean a whole new career direction, which could involve the need for additional education, training, or skills.Gaining the proper skill set prior to making your career change is important because it helps you get started on the right foot and increases your chances of being successful right from the start. You'll also want to map out a plan, including a timetable, specific goals, and financial concerns. Ultimately, you have to believe in yourself and know that, somehow, you're on the right track to success, happiness, and career freedom. Yes, every transition takes time, but with proper training, a solid plan, and a whole lot of courage, you can take that leap into a new career and a new, better life ahead.
