Lance Armstrong: Cycling Legend Lives Strong and Sells Stronger

Riding with an aerodynamic bike, helmet and suit to reduce wind drag and save seconds, Armstrong made easy work of the winding, hilly and crowd-lined route that looped north of Saint-Etienne in central France. After winning this stage, Armstrong confirmed his desire to retire at the top of his game.

Wearing his trademark yellow Live Strong wristband, a piece of retail merchandising marvel, Armstrong set out last of the 155 riders left after three weeks of racing across France and its mountains. But he quickly smoked the competition with determined efforts on the tricky and technical route’s sharp bends, fast downhills and tiring uphills. Armstrong beat the field by 23 seconds in the clock-race, crowning another dominant Tour by giving himself the individual stage win he had lacked this year until now.

The Best of Lance Armstrong:

  • A Torrid Pace. Armstrong’s time was 1 hour, 11 minutes and 46 seconds, for an average speed of 28.8 miles per hour and plenty fast enough to ensure a victory in Paris.
  • Worthy Competition. At the first time-check, Armstrong trailed the talented Ivan Basso of Italy. But he led by the second time-check and stayed ahead from that point.
  • Another Yellow Jersey. On Sunday, barring a freak crash on what is traditionally a victory ride into Paris with a sprint finish at the end, Armstrong will collect his 83rd and last yellow jersey.

Cycling has definitely brought fame and fortune to perhaps the greatest cyclist of all time. But that's nothing compared to the money that Armstrong has made in the world of retail merchandising. Retail ventures, such as the yellow wrist band and competition t-shirts, are the works of merchandising professionals who know how to capitalize in the successful sports market.

Your Retail Merchandising Career:

  • Environment. As a retail merchandising professional, you will spend your days in a contemporary office setting creating new retail campaigns.
  • Outlook. With the consumer explosion driven by the Internet, you will enjoy an above average employment growth rate in merchandising.
  • Education. Most retail merchandising professionals begin their careers with a four-year retail program from an area college or university.
