When you think of a photographer, you might envision someone taking pictures 24/7. However, a photography career involves much more than simply taking pictures. Today, photographers are employed in portrait and commercial studios, newspapers, magazines, television companies, broadcast companies, advertising agencies, and much more.

Get Technical, Think Photography School.

As a photographer, you will produce and preserve images that help to paint a picture or tell a story. In order to accomplish this task, you must have a "good eye", imagination, and creativity. Additionally, you should be able to compliment your creative side with a strong technical background. This is where photography school comes into play. Many universities, colleges, vocational-technical institutes, and private trade schools offer photography degrees and courses. Basic courses include equipment, processes, and techniques.

Brooks Institute is a world leader in visual arts education. Brooks' two campuses are located in Santa Barbara and Ventura, California.

Currently, emphasis is placed on computerized software programs, which will allow you to manipulate and enhance scanned digital images to create a desired effect more efficiently. And because job competition is expected to be keen, a degree or certification obtained from an accredited photography school will greatly enhance your chances of succeeding in your photography career.

Photography Career Explained

Many photographers specialize in a specific area of photography. The following represent some popular photography career choices:
  1. Commercial/Industrial Photographers: Take pictures of buildings, models, merchandise, artifacts, and landscapes.
  2. Scientific Photographers: Take images of subjects to records scientific or medical data phenomena.
  3. News Photographers: Photograph famous people, places, sporting events, political news, and community events for newspapers, journals, television, and magazines.
  4. Fine Arts Photographers: Take pictures of their choosing and sell them as fine artwork.
  5. Self-employed Photographers: Develop their own business and work in conjunction with many vendors and companies to take pictures of a specific contracted project for a predetermined fee.
Ultimately, the photography school you choose will depend upon the photography career you decide to embark upon. There is no one right choice for everyone. Research your choices carefully and consider your strengths, weaknesses, and future career goals. Then get started on your rewarding career in photography.
