Major wireless players Sprint and Nextel announced plans for a $36 billion merger Wednesday, creating a new major wireless communication power with a customer base to challenge its two larger rivals. And no, the new name will not be Sextel. Disappointed?

In this major merger, experts called the combination of Sprint and Nextel a coming together of equals. Sprint is seen as a leader in wireless data communications and has a stronger presence in the consumer market, while Nextel has been the pioneer in the walkie-talkie service and has its primary customer base among business customers. The deal will mean big changes for both sets of wireless communication customers.

Details of the Sprint and Nextel Merger:
  • New Name. The new company that will result from the merger has been dubbed Sprint Nextel with shareholders owning about 50 percent of the new company.
  • Jilted Customers. Nextel's customer base will be unhappily surprised that the focus of the new company will move away from the walkie talkie type communication that has made them popular.
  • Regulatory Approval. All that is left to complete the merger is to obtain regulatory approval by the powers that be and the new company of Sprint Nextel is in business.

A wireless communication career is an excellent option for you if you are looking for technology jobs with all of the perks. Wireless communication will blow up in the next few years as more and more people are using wireless phones for communication. Here are some of the highpoints of a career in wireless communication.

Environmental Career Options:
