Ecommerce Experts Make a Comeback

Retail companies are spending a lot more money on ways to adapt their businesses to ecommerce, analysts say. Not surprisingly, this augurs well for those pursuing ecommerce degrees. Companies want job candidates who are trained to sell on the internet.

As reported on internetretailer.com, several forces are pushing retailers towards replacing or upgrading their ecommerce software. Foremost among these is the companies desire to know that all their bases are covered. As new technologies emerge, customers have quickly come to expect new ways to buy products. Retailers need to have multiple channels of doing business to keep up with demanding e-consumers.

The other main motivation for growth in ecommerce technology is that home grown software systems can no longer handle the volume and shopping demands of today's consumer market.

Retailers No Longer Develop Ecommerce Software

According to industry analyst Adam Sarner of Gartner Inc., companies stopped investing in new ecommerce technology with the bursting of the internet bubble five years ago.

"Before the dot-com bomb in the 1990s, there was a lot of investment in ecommerce, but not a lot of users," Sarner told internetreatiler.com. "Now there are a lot of users, but ecommerce investments have been flat, so there's a new gap that retailers are starting to fill."

Wanted: Ecommerce Experts

In order to update their technologies, retailers need the help of ecommerce experts. Students graduating from degree programs have this expertise. In school, ecommerce degree candidates learn to handle and implement the biggest ecommerce platforms from software companies like IBM or the Art Technology Group.

These software vendors, says Saner, have improved their ability to deliver packaged ecommerce applications that don't require much development by IT staffs. "This is providing more flexibility for business owners to work on customer relationships," Sarner says.

Ecommerce Job Flexibility

In addition, this new uniformity in ecommerce technology means there is more flexibility in changing jobs from retailer to retailer. Unlike in the past, employees with ecommerce training can feel confident that they'll be able to switch from one retailer to the next, without too much difficulty.
