A traditional animation career used to consist of 99% drawing. However, today drawing is only a part of animation. Animation involves everything from the initial sketch to the final computer rendering. And, just because you can draw doesn't mean that you have the expertise to put that idea into a 3D format or a computerized image. The only true way to obtain complete animation training is to attend an accredited college, university, or technical school that offers a degree in animation.

How to Select the Right Animation School
In the field of animation, it is true that you get what you pay for. At least as far as animation schools are concerned. While many schools offer animation classes or electives in animation software, there is a significant difference in those that have an actual animation program. When researching an animation school, look for one that provides instruction in current animation hardware and software, offers internships, and has a good reputation among the animation community. Most animation schools are more than happy to provide you with free informational packets, which will give you a better perspective of what they teach, available facilities, and previous students that you can talk with.

The Animation Process
Animation comprises six major categories. And while there are individuals who are qualified to work in all areas, most animators prefer to specialize in one specific venue.
  1. Storyboards - Numerous storyboard drawings are created as the blueprint for the action and dialog of an animated film.
  2. Modeling - Animation software is used to create 3D computer models of characters, props, and sets. These computer models help to describe the shape, motion, and expression of objects.
  3. Animation - After the modeling stage, animation software allows scenes to be choreographed frame by frame.
  4. Shading - Once the scenes are finalized, character shading, including textures, finishes, and colors, are added to every object in the scene.
  5. Lighting - Using "digital lights", every scene is defined to enhance mood and emotion.
  6. Rendering - Finally, a rendering software package` helps to finish each image by computing each pixel of the image to a film, video, or CD-ROM.
