Architects Build Movie Magicby Jessica GroachJessica.Groach@careertrainingdirectory.com Career Training Columnist When Mike Gasaway graduated from architecture school in Cincinnati, he realized that what he really wanted to do was "kids' stuff." So he did. Gasaway's five years in architecture school opened his eyes to a whole world of design, from CAD drafting and animation to creating entire worlds in his imagination. Those skills translated easily into the movie world. When he realized animation was what he really loved, he studied up, made a demo tape, and sent it to Hollywood through overnight mail. The next day, he was offered a job on the Walt Disney hit film Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.
Architecture and Movie MagicIn similar fashion Bill Rea, a Montana architecture school graduate, is an art director for many Hollywood films. His list of credits includes many of the underwater environments used in Titanic, as well as many sets used in Rocky and Bullwinkle, True Lies, Ali, and Major League. As an art director, Rea designs artificial environments that must appear real to the audience. That takes a complete understanding of landscapes, topography, and geometry, as well as the imagination and the knowledge of animation to pull it all together. That's why architects are a perfect fit.Architects, interior architects, or even landscape architects who can create 3D models of buildings are highly valuable in Hollywood. These professionals are not only familiar with intricate measurements, materials, and placements of supporting structures and design elements, but they are able to envision these things in 3D environments. So if the idea of internship and rigorous licensure exams make a traditional career as an architect seem daunting, you might just have a career on the Silver Screen!
