Tim Burton, Director of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Animator ExtraordinaireBy Dan GrushkinCareer Training Directory Columnist This summer's next zany blockbuster, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, an adaptation of Roald Dahl's 1964 story by the same name, comes from the twisted imagination of none other than Tim Burton, the man behind Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and most recently The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The story follows young Charlie in his strange encounter with magical, mysterious Willy Wonka (played by Johnny Depp) and his world-famous chocolate factory. Burton's surreal brand of imagery resurrects the classic tale for a modern audience using state of the art computer special-effects and CGI. Burton, who's become famous for his twisted fairytale on screen, got his start in animation school. Burton Goes to Animation SchoolStruggling academically, Burton found himself drawn to monster movies such as Godzilla and the like. Early on, he began drawing and painting. He transferred the strange and wondrous worlds in his imagination onto the paper and canvas. A lot of animators begin their careers as young doodlers and artists, but most need assistance to take the next step. The next right move for you could be animation school. Burton attended California Institute of the Arts for animation school to learn the tricks and skills necessary to get an animation job.At the time, CalArts was considered a breeding ground for Disney. Having completed animation school, Burton found an animation job working on the studio's The Fox and the Hound. Burton's imagination was eventually noticed and he became the star he is today. His path is a familiar one in the industry. Animation school gives you the tools necessary to give full expression to your imagination. It also provides the network that may land your next animation job, just like it did for Tim Burton. About the AuthorDan Grushkin is a freelance writer in Brooklyn, New York.
