Nonprofit Management: A Career with HeartBy Kathy A. JohnsonJob seekers sometimes overlook a large sector of the economy: nonprofit organizations. According to one estimate, more than one million nonprofit institutions exist in the U.S. alone, employing about 12 million people.
Nonprofit organizations contribute to society by providing services such as health care, education, and many others. If you're looking for a career with a heart, nonprofit management might be for you. Significant Responsibility To work in nonprofit management, you'll need strong people skills, communication skills, creativity, sales ability and the desire to help others. Your job duties may vary widely. You might work with a Board of Directors one day, organize a fundraiser the next, and then attend a work-related social event after that. On the plus side, you may have the chance for significant responsibility early in your career, and you'll have a chance to help others. On the minus side, most likely you'll work hard and your pay may not reflect your level of skill and responsibility. Nonprofit Education Hundreds of colleges and universities offer undergraduate courses or graduate degree programs that have a concentration in nonprofit management. In addition to the usual management courses, you'll have classes unique to nonprofits (fundraising or specialized marketing or accounting classes, for example). Several routes to nonprofit management exist, including a Master of Science degree in nonprofit management or an MBA program that specializes in nonprofit management. Nonprofit jobs require dedication, but they also offer great rewards. You won't get rich working for a nonprofit, but you'll have the chance to make a positive impact on others' lives.
